RAL system

What is RAL

RAL is a colour matching system widely utilised in Europe, particularly in industries such as architecture, construction, and industrial design. RAL stands for “Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung,” (try to pronounce it hehe). It translates to “National Committee for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance” in British English.

Colours identification

Similar to PANTONE, RAL provides a standardised set of colours to ensure consistency in colour communication and reproduction across different industries and applications. This system assigns unique identification codes to specific colours, known as RAL numbers. For example “RAL 9010” (“Pure White”) or “RAL 5002.”(“Ultramarine Blue” ). Each colour is formulated with specific pigment combinations to achieve consistent and reproducible results. The RAL colour palette covers a wide range of shades, including solid colours, metallic colours, and effect finishes accuracy is crucial. You can see some sample on the picture below. Where is it used ?

It’s important to note that PANTONE is commonly used in the printing industry, graphic design and various other industries throughout Europe and beyond. It is the highly preferred colour matching system for specifying colours in architectural and industrial coatings, powder coatings or car colours. Worth to mention, while automotive manufacturers typically have their own proprietary colour systems, such as those used by car companies like BMW or Mercedes-Benz, RAL colours can still be referenced to provide a standardised description or approximation of a car’s colour.

These proprietary systems are typically used for precise colour matching and production purposes within the automotive manufacturing process.
